Overview
presentation of the arts scene in Berlin in the field of visual arts.
The talk will start with a short historical background about Berlin´s
art scene as a cultural capital since the early 20th Century up to
today. The main topic will be about different artist initiatives and
established arts institutions (Akademie der Künste, Neue
Nationalgalerie, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, Martin Gropius Bau,
KW-Berlin, NGBK, Künstlerhaus Bethanien and Kunstraum
Kreuzberg/Bethanien), how they are organised and which focus they have.
After this, there will be a presentation of some relevant art events of
the last years, such as the Berlin Biennale, the opening of the
Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, with a focus on the opening of private
collections, for instance the Flick Collection am Hamburger Bahnhof
Museum, or the Boros Collection, built in a former Nazi Bunker. The
talk will include information about the demolition of Palast der
Republik and the controversy about building a castle or a Kunsthalle
for the city. Besides this, there will be a short presentation on
Berlin´s art market, Berlin´s art fairs (Art Forum Berlin, Preview
Berlin, Berliner Kunstsalon, Berliner Liste and the newest art fair
ABC_art berlin contemporary) and its contemporary art gallery scene.
