Artists' initiatives in Indonesia.
Art discourse and art praxis in a dialogue.October 15th, 2009, 7 pm
A talk by Katerina Valdivia Bruch in the context of the Asia Pacific Weeks, Berlin
The
talk will give an historical introduction to the origins of the
artists' initiatives in Indonesia in its socio-political context,
after the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch occupation. It will start with
an overview of the sanggar system, the political shift of the artist communities (for instance LEKRA and GSRB) during
the New Order regime until the late 70's, the new forms of communities
and the mushrooming development of artists' initiatives from the late
80's until now, with examples of initiatives from
Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta. During the talk, there will be a
screening of interviews with personalities from the Indonesian
contemporary art scene: Mella Jaarsma (Director of Cemeti Art House),
Agung Hujatnikajennong (Curator of Selasar Sunaryo Art Space), Nuraini
Juliastuti (Director of Kunci Cultural Studies Center) and Ade Darmawan
(Director of ruangrupa).
