Arts and Conversation:
Kunci Cultural Studies Center, Indonesia

Public talks by Nuraini Juliastuti (Director) and Ferdiansyah Thajib (Research Coordinator)

March 16 and 17, 2011

Kunci Cultural Studies Center
(KCSC) was established in October 1999 as a non-profit organisation in Yogyakarta. The aim of the institution is to strengthen the relationship between culture, humanities and social sciences, and to analyse contemporary social and cultural phenomena in Indonesia. KCSC organises interdisciplinary events in the intersection between cultural studies, urban and popular culture and art criticism. Kunci Cultural Studies Center is a private initiative that collaborates actively with a number of institutions and the public. The institution is interested in examining how cultural movements are produced, and believe in the importance of knowledge production and archiving, in order to promote new approaches to education in society outside of the established education institutions.

Space/Scape project: reproduction of social constructions in public spaces

SPACE/SCAPE examines the socio-cultural dynamics that emerge in the surroundings of the Alun-Alun-place in Yogyakarta. The project includes artistic experiments as a means to understand the performative aspects of the Alun-Alun-place as a public space. With this project, they also want to illustrate examples of how local, cultural, economic and political characteristics of society develop, using an interdisciplinary approach through creative interpretations and interventions in the public space.

Kunci at art & culture international e.V.
Knowledge production in the post-Suharto era (after 1998)

In the post-Suharto era, new modes of knowledge production appeared as alternatives to the established education promoted by the government. These discourses were expressions of a so-called counter-culture and were demands coming from a young and active generation of people that needed a new framework to express their ideas. Kunci is part of this movement of alternative spaces. They established as an institution in the field of cultural studies and served as intermediaries interacting and communicating with the public, giving new approaches to certain socio-political subject matters.
The talk presents an introduction to the work of Kunci and provides detailed examples of projects they have organised in the urban areas of Yogyakarta and Jakarta.

Organised by Katerina Valdivia Bruch in collaboration with art & culture and international e.V. and KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V.

Arts and Conversation, was initiated by Katerina Valdivia Bruch in 2007. It started first as a “living room” project called Haus Bruch, in which invited art practitioners gave a talk about their work. The invited participants were developing work in Berlin, so that most part of the presentations were about an ongoing project. The concept has been extended to invite experts in the field of cultural and/or social studies and humanities to do a presentation in Berlin.

With the support of:

Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IfA), Education Department of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia and KunstBüroBerlin.
